How To Create Personalized Tie Dye Coffee Mugs!

Alright, friends! I’m back with another cool and simple tie dye extravaganza DIY ridiculously fun and also easy craft.

Because remember, I only choose ideas that beginners like myself can tackle! And man oh man do I have faith in you that YOU can do this as well!

I really wanted to share TODAY, because if you were trying to think of a last-minute fun Father’s Day craft to do with your kids, you could definitely try this! Your kids can pick the colors, as well as what the personalization could be for Dad. (We went with the super creative personalization: “Dad” 😂)

Here’s What You’ll Need:

  1. Ceramic coffee mugs! (I used minis that we got for $.94 each at Wal-Mart. I linked some minis my real-life friend used for the project in the shoppable link below!)
  2. Nail polish – can be new or used! I don’t paint my nails anymore (I’m sure you’ve seen my diy nail projects and if you haven’t, check them out HERE)
  3. Deep, disposable pan (or just a pan you plan to never eat out of again)
  4. Surface protection (like a garbage bag)!
  5. Toothpicks for stirring
  6. Scrapbook stickers (optional!) for personalization
  7. Dishwasher-safe ModPodge (optional!)

You can shop for what you need below:

Now that you’ve gathered your ingredients, it’s time to find a well-ventilated area (nail polish is clearly not a pleasant odor!) and get started!

Step 1: Fill your pan with warm water.

I suggested having it pretty deep so you can dunk your cup however deep you’d like! And I’m not sure why the temp matters…but it does.

Step 2 (Optional): Add personalization.

I added some scrapbooking stickers to make one of our mugs say “Dad.” If you want to do that, now the time!

Step 3: Pour in nail polish.

Move quickly on this step! If the nail polish dries too much, it will bunch in one place on your mug. Can pour all around and mix colors.

Step 4: Mix with toothpick.

Use the toothpick to make a swirled pattern with your colors!

Step 5: Dip the mug in the middle of nail polish.

As you pull the mug out of the water, the nail polish will stick to the sides in a marble-like pattern. I dunked mine a few times to make sure I had adequate color all around the mug. You can dip only at the bottom for a cool, partially covered effect, or go all the way to the top (though make sure none gets inside)!

Tip: Use nail polish remover if you’d like to straighten out the top line!

Step 6: Let mug dry.

Ours took several hours to feel truly dry to the touch!

Step 7 (Optional): Remove stickers (if you put any on earlier)

After 3-5 minutes of dry time, you should be able to pull those stickers off (you are likely to get a little nail polish on your skin, just FYI!)

I dipped this one too many times, but it’s an idea of what the personalization would look like.

Step 8 (Optional): Add a layer of dishwasher safe ModPodge.

If you’d like to add another layer of protection and make your mug dishwasher safe, you can add the dishwasher-safe formula of ModPodge (which requires a curing time of about a month, just FYI)!

And that’s it!
